Okay, some weird stuff has been going on at Tokyopop UK ever since the initial restructuring a while back.

The usual rep I contact at TP UK had stopped answering emails, and there were rumors that they (Tokyopop) were going to reduce the number of volumes even more.

However I finally got a reply and it dosen’t look good on the UK front for Tokyopop. There have been even more lay offs, including the rep I contact. Also they’ve pullout of almost all of their scheduled events with Watersotones (the largest UK book store).

Also, the rumor of the volumes been reduced now seems to be the complete collapse of Tokyopop UK.

Like Viz, Tokyopop have never really cared much about the UK fan base, and we’ve always been a secondary thought. With releases coming months, and in some cases years, after the original US release.

TPUK have always maintained that stores have to buy official UK titles, rather than the US ones, and stores frequently thumb their nose and buy volumes from who ever has them. This has caused friction between the two parties, and is, according to TP, the cause of the poor sales in the UK.

The future of TPUK is currently up in the air, the rep who was laid off feels that while TP are going to reduce the number of volumes released this year, it’s just a matter of time before the branch is closed completely. Total volumes released in 2009 is expected to be less than half of those released in 2008, which is insane since UK releases are already seriously behind the US ones.

Looking at things as they are at the moment, I can see TPUK being closed down during the second quarter of 2009.
