About the Mangaka
Tateno Makoto, also uses the penname Shinjuku Tango, is best known for two titles Yellow and Happy Boys. A number of her titles have been translated into English, including King of Cards, Hate to Love You, Omen, Red Angel, 9th Sleep, Hero Heel, Ka Shin Fu, Steal Moon, and Yellow.
About the Manga
Several things took me by surprise about this volume, firstly the mangaka. She’s the same master mind behind Angelic Runes which is currently one of my faves. However it’s also one of the shortest manga I’ve ever seen, running to only sixty-six pages in length.
The cover design is okay, and for what it is, it’s well drawn. However to me it just doesn’t look or feel ’awesome’, or scream anything about the story. However it is a well drawn cover. If I’m honest, I sort of prefer the original Amazon listing cover art, it has a better look and feel to it, as well as generates a good atmosphere about the book. The current one just doesn’t fit it IMO
I really liked the art of this volume, it was both sharp and clear. I also liked the scenery and atmosphere that she creates with her art. The character designs were awesome, including the support characters who were well drawn and well developed. Something that usually gets left by the wayside.
The big problem for me with the art is the same problem the story has, the volume is to short.
In essence what we have here is just over a quarter a standard manga, so the art looks and feels rushed. As I was reading through I felt the entire premise was nothing more than to get to the sex scene at the end. Which for me was a bit of a disappointment, since I rather enjoyed their constant cat and mouse games.
The story suffers the same sort of feeling. While the actual story looks amazing, and has a good feel to it, so much has to be done in a mere sixty-six pages it feels rushed.
The main points of the story look really interesting, and I have to admit that there were elements of this volume that really got me interested. However I find myself wondering if it’s really worth buying a volume of manga that’s only sixty-six pages long.
If this was marked as a volume zero, or a teaser/introduction to the series, it would be worth buying I feel, since it’s a great intro. But if it turns out to be a single volume I’d be greatly disappointed.
Digital Manga Publications did a good job with this release. The translation is good and flows smoothly. Though I still miss honorific’s, shame they don’t follow Yen Press’ example and keep them in. We get some good editing, with a good and clean choice of fonts making it easy to read and follow.
All told another good non-rape yaoi title that I enjoyed reading and want to read more of.
One good thing of note about this release is that it’s cheaper than a normal manga, which makes sense I suppose. If it had a full manga price tag I doubt it would ever sell
Oh, and one final note, if you haven’t read the original Yellow series, I recommend you do so before this one. As this volume makes a large number of references to the previous series, some of them are clearly important. Which I think would get in the way of enjoying and understanding current events in the new series.
