About the Mangaka
Not a lot of info available on Lee Eun, and what is available seems to be conflicting. According to Wikipedia Lee is a film director, though there is no mention of this in the brief biography available at the front of this volume.
Her other manhwa include: Monica, The Eye of the Dragon and The Rebellion of the 36°Cs
About the Manga
Every series has their bad volumes, especially when you get medium to long series. Sadly this volume is the bad egg in this series
I have no idea what’s going on anymore, on any level. This volume takes the weirdness of the previous volume and multiplies it loads. It rather oddly started out okay, but soon descended into contradicting itself, multiple times.
Like a lot of the other volumes I do like the cover art, it’s got an olden feel to it, and the colours of it make it look awesome.
A lot of the inner art this volume also looks bad, but as there’s only minor changes from the previous volumes I think the fact I couldn’t get into this volume is colouring my impressions.
Unfortunately I think this is a very important issue, or at least it is for me. If I can’t get into the story or make sense of it the art tends to look less than it is. However I have to admit that when I did my flick though before reading (I always do a quick flick through of the art before I sit down and read a volume), I noticed a lot of characters the frankly looked naf.
What really damages this volume is the story, it’s flow and weirdness make it all but impossible to get a grip on what’s going on.
The initial story of the mermaid starts off pretty well, in fact I loved the way the three characters interacted and the history. Unfortunately the end of it makes no sense at all, I read it through numerous times and it still doesn’t make any sense.
Sadly it carries on with the rest of the story, it flows like molasses going uphill. The story itself has a few flaws this time, but the biggest issue I had was with the contradicting of the volume. Barely a few pages go by before it contradicts what it just said.
Granted, some of the misconceptions are later cleared up, but it’s done so really quickly and makes the volume look all the worse for it. Though some of the revelations don’t really make a lot of sense either and left me all the more confused.
Hopefully, this is just setting the stage for the next volume which will clear things up. However even if that’s the case elements of this volume still just won’t make any sense.
For the first time in the year or so I’ve been reviewing Yen Press titles I think the problem may be in their translation, since several sentences make no sense at all. On the plus side there’s no guttering this volume, so it gets points from me there
I’m borderline dropping this from my Essential Read list at the moment, it all hinges on the next volume, which has to be spectacular or it’ll be dropped. I don’t mind mysteries much, but I hate the feeling of never knowing what’s going on. It’s okay at first, but for it to be dragged on for this long ends up leaving a crap feeling towards the story.
