About the Manga
After the previous volume it was with some reluctance I picked up this volume to read. All I can say is AWESOME!! Volume eight blew away my reservation over the previous volume.
While I loved the volume, I still find the art a bit weird. The hints of modern style characters, tied with the weird dark outlines around the eyes; leads to almost all of the characters having a decidedly evil look to them.
However, at the same time this style fits a lot of the characters. It’s odd, that on one page it out of place, but on the next it’s fitting. Shahryar and Jafar, both their personalities and designs fit perfectly. Though Jafar looks like a hippy, which I have to admit still makes me laugh from time to time.
I do like the clothing designs, and buildings and world settings. The clothing is especially good, with a lot of detail at times. The buildings and surroundings are also treated with a lot of detail, though a few times there is a lack of detail on the surroundings.
Story wise the developments of the previous volume carries one, with more devious back stabbing and plot building. I loved the intrigues of this volume, and I have to admit I was surprised at how events played out and ending.
There was no story per-say this volume, what we did get however was a full telling of the back story. Explaining how things came about the way they have. All I can say is WOW.
The revelations of this story were stunning, and I found myself changing my opinion of several characters. And more importantly, feeling sympathy and understanding for a character I’d hated.
As the volume progressed I lost sight of who the villain of the series is, and now wonder if there’s even more back story yet to be revealed. However I find myself thinking along the lines of there is no real villain in the series. Rather people just reacting badly to bad circumstances.
I for one can’t wait for the series to play out so I can finally figure out who is who
No issues with Yen Press this volume, the translation was smooth and consistent, with good editing. No issues with guttering either. In fact my only complain is a minor niggle, I hate the orange plate at the beginning of the book, it’s very hard to see because it’s so faint, and done in orange. No idea why.
This series retains it’s place on my Essential Read list. I had been close to dropping it, but if I’m honest this volume really blew me away. My issues with the art can easily be overlooked by the way the story is progressing.
