Lori over at Manga Xanadu (found through MangaBlog) came up with an idea to shut anime companies up, over the bitching about fansubs.

This past year, anime companies have been claiming that fansubs are killing the anime industry as we know it in the US.  The people involved with dubs are especially vocal about this, the producers, directors and actors, since it is their side of production that is most affected.  Here’s a thought for these people; instead of crying doom and gloom for the anime industry, why don’t they try an area that fansubs CAN’T compete with them on?   Audio Dramas based on manga.

I’ve never understood this bitching in the first place if I’m honest. The main problem with dubbed anime is that it sucks, big time. And what’s worse the dubs have been getting worse and worse over the past few years. Some of them are so bad I wonder why they even bothered to dub, would of been better and cheaper not to bother.

However, onto the case in point. Saying fansubbers can’t compete with companies that were to release audio dramas is waaaay of base. Several groups have sprung up of late who do nothing else but the various radio drama’s.

The problem with fansubbed versions is that they’re subbed and these have to be read. Several of these groups use stills from the actual anime or manga to add some visual stuff to it.

A dubbed version could, in theory, dominate over fansubs. However to do that they first need to get rid of the dubbers they have at the moment and get some bloody decent ones. Re hire those who did the dubbing in the 80′s and early 90′s and have them teach how to do some proper dubbing. Hire some fresh blood straight from acting school, or better yet scour schools and universities for people wanting to get into dubbing. At least this way the young girls and guys of the anime would sound like youngsters, rather than the usual old farts trying to put on a childish voice….and failing badly. *cough*Angelic Layer*cough*

Only when the dubbers put as much effort, thought, and training into their work as the Japanese do (or hell even half the effort!!) then they would be able to dominate over fansubs in this area. The radio drama’s I’ve got I wouldn’t listen to or buy if they were dubbed. However if they had a decent dub, where the characters sound alive and vibrant, then I would.

Perhaps they should take a look at how the likes of Disney and Pixar have grown, and look at adapting their lessons.

The ideal solution would be for all the studios to form a sort of VA School and groom their own actors from the ground up. Have the teachers spend some time in Japan observing how the Japanese VA Schools are run, learn from the masters, so to speak.

Yes it’ll be expensive and it’s not a short term answer, rather a ling term one. However if all of them chipped in to the costs, then it could be spread around and easily absorbed.

For me, I think if there was more quality dubbed anime then more anime would be sold, I know I would buy more.
