About the Manga

legend_2

Sadly Legend doesn’t live up to my expectations.

The story itself is interesting, and Woo SooJung includes a brief thought on the original story that seems to have inspired him. However the story does nothing new, it takes the same old bog standard hooks and doesn’t introduce anything else.

This alone wouldn’t be so bad, I’ve found others that have followed similar paths to be good. Where this series seems to be failing is on the way he uses the formats. The humour is misplaced, and at times just feels totally wrong, and at others you’re left with a ‘Oh, I was supposed to laugh here’ feel.

Yet I have to admit that the potential is there for a great story, not epic, as in Chronicles of the Cursed Sword’ epic, but enjoyable. The reason for this are the main characters, while they’re generic, they are fun. I’ve always liked the tom-boy girl and the silent guy routine. It has a lot of possibilities, ands I love seeing how they’re handled.

KARA’s art is superb yet again, it’s clean and crisp, for the most part. However when it comes to comedy scenes she seems to struggle a bit, as though drawing comedy/chibified (did I just invent a new word lol) characters is something new to her, and as a result it looks bad at times.

The colour panels are a nice touch, though the content doesn’t really fit, not to mention it interrupts the story flow, never a good thing.

When I learnt Yen had this I was looking forward to it, however I’ve noticed the paper in this release is sub par, or at least it is when you compare it to their other releases. The paper has a rough, yet furry feel to it, and is off white not their usual white.

Maybe it’s to keep it in line with the volume one release, but this is one aspect if not minded them to have changed. Though everything else is the same. Size, fonts (as far as I can tell lol) and yeah, gutter problems!! all are the same.

Wile the gutter issues aren’t as bad as volume one, it does make me wonder how they can have gutter issues in an oversized volume.

I do however still love the covers, nice and glossy, and of a high quality. The other place that Yen have made a ‘hats off’ effort is the price. As I mentioned in the earlier post volume one was quite expensive. Volume two however has the lovely price tag of £5.99, in line with a lot of their other releases.

I still won’t add this to my Essential Read list, I think I’ll need another volume or two before I can add it. I want to see if the bad jokes die out.

Where to Buy

Unfortunately it seems that the UK stores still haven’t received their supplies due to the printing errors, so all I can give you is the Book Depository
